A visit to Cape Town would not be complete without a trip to Inverdoorn Game Reserve and Iziba Safari Lodge. Only 2.5 hours outside of the city a jam-packed, Big 5 Day Trip Safari with a visit to the cheetah sanctuary is altogether achievable.
Karoo mornings are crisp and clear with wide, open blue skies and expansive views of the game reserve visible in every direction. On arrival stretch your legs, breathe in the fresh air and enjoy a refreshing welcome drink and a light meander through the beautifully manicured succulent garden or a bathroom break as you wait for the game drive to get underway.
Day trip visitors enjoy an almost three-hour safari game drive across the 10 000 ha game reserve in an open safari vehicle in search of the Big 5. As you enter the reserve you may encounter a herd of Red Lechwe, a waterbuck species, before dipping down deeper into the reserve towards the lions' reserve. You will be blown away by the majestic beauty of the male Cape Barbary lion. A rare specimen, this breed is noticeable for its extraordinarily large black mane. From thereon you will encounter an endless number of buck species ranging from the stunningly marked Oryx; its less attractive, and yet still fascinating, cousin the wildebeest; eland; steenbok and the nation's pride: the springbok. You will be greeted by herds of zebra that might momentarily raise their heads to see who you are before returning to their grazing or you might come across the endangered rhino with its horn intact.
After many twists and turns through the scrub and sparsely treed bush spotting elephant, giraffe and hippo you will arrive at your last stop before returning to the lodge for lunch – the cheetah sanctuary. Here you will gain key insight into the behaviour of cheetahs and the science behind caring for cheetahs in conservation programmes. These fascinating creatures are the heart and soul of Inverdoorn Game Reserve and all the staff at Inverdoorn are dedicated to their care and to raising awareness about their plight.
Three-hours on a dusty safari game drive will surely build up your appetite. On returning to the lodge, a staff member will be waiting to offer you a cool, clean cloth to wipe away the dust of the game drive before a delicious three-course, buffet lunch is served. Summertime in the Karoo is characterised by clear, warm and sunny days so lunch will most likely be served beneath the Eucalyptus tree alongside the succulent garden.
Inverdoorn offers good, wholesome South African cooking with a twist of French sophistication. All meals are prepared with only the freshest, seasonal produce, sourced directly from local farms.
Should the weather conditions be just right, you might be surprised by two very special inhabitants of Inverdoorn*, Banzi and Nushka – two of the lodge's tame cheetahs on walkabout with their handlers; the perfect end to a perfect Day Trip Safari.
If your Day Trip Safari leaves you wanting more then why not book an overnight stay?
On overnight safaris you will be treated to two safaris, one at sunrise and one at sunset; and since the animals are much livelier at these times, you will witness the cheetah's training runs, so it is well worth the stay. With a number of luxury accommodation options to choose from there will definitely be something to suit your tastes and budget.
Day Trip Safaris start at R860 per person. Book now!
