"Each species is a masterpiece, a creation assembled with extreme care and genius." - Edward O. Wilson
The Stand Up! concert is the concept of Damien Vergnaud, founder of RhinoProtect and owner of Inverdoorn Game Reserve and Iziba Safari Lodge. RhinoProtect was established in response to the unabated and indiscriminate slaughter of rhinos in South Africa. Following the cruel dehorning of a neighbouring game reserve's rhino, Damien and his team, which included concerned rangers and veterinary specialists, decided to administer the horn treatment they had developed.
The horn treatment involves injecting a barium-dye into the horn of the rhino. This solution serves three purposes. Firstly, the horn is more easily detected at airport and customs' thoroughfares and therefore more difficult to smuggle. Secondly, the substance makes the horn unfit for human consumption, resulting in diarrhea and vomiting. Thirdly, the dye in the mix makes the horn useless for ornamental purposes such as dagger handles or jewellery. The horn treatment is not harmful to the animal.
Thus far, the three rhinos at Inverdoorn Game Reserve have survived the indignity and suffering of being dehorned or worse. But RhinoProtect knows that an end is still far out of sight. So it is the express and only purpose of RhinoProtect to deliver on the promise inherent in its name – protect more rhino.
The RhinoProtect mandate will be realised through rallying public awareness and support and in so doing raising the necessary funds to research and refine the potentially life-saving horn-treatment, and of course, to roll out the treatment out to other game reserves free-of-charge.
Human greed and ignorance feeds the insatiable desire for rhino horn. RhinoProtect wishes to re-educate those in society that cling to ancient myths, that their practice is nonsensical – and we’ll do so with your help, one horn at a time and until we have more rhinos protected than poached.
Preserve our natural heritage. Support RhinoProtect.
