According to a UNEP (United Nations Environment Program) report, the main reasons driving cheetahs to their extinction are “habitat loss and degradation, urban development and hunting”. This sad reality results in the fact that, today, the cheetah population stands at 10% of their historic highs. In whole Africa, the estimated number of adults is not more than 10,000 and less than a thousand in South Africa.
Moreover the loss of their habitat, cheetahs are also murdered by humans. In the entire African continent, farmers kill them to avoid having the animals they breeding for themselves to be killed by the big cats.
To help them as much as possible, Inverdoorn Game Reserve has created a totally dedicated programme for the conservation, breeding and rehabilitation of cheetahs, named: Cape Cheetah! Cape Cheetah believes in the rescue of cheetahs. Indeed, cheetahs can be saved if people around the world (local, tourists, etc.) really want it and act on it.

How can the cheetah be saved?
- Cheetahs can be saved by: first restoring their habitat in wild lands where the big cats could freely roam without being shot by farmers located too closely from them.
- Cheetahs can be saved by educating people, farmers, children about the story of the majestic African cheetahs and how the big cats represent the diversity of this marvellous continent.
- Cheetahs can be saved if humans respect the environment and its natural balance between game and predators.
- Cheetahs can be saved by encouraging governments and officials to intensify the protection of the cheetah and reinforcing breeding and conversation programmes.
- Cheetahs can be saved if measures are taken and projects are drawn to sensitise conversation animal centres, not only in Africa, but also on the international stage.
- Cheetahs can be saved if the message is widely spread through different media channels on different platforms such as social media on the Internet, blogs, radio, TV, newspapers, conferences etc. to create awareness around this threat of extinction for one of the most famous big cats on the planet.
- Cheetahs can be saved by leaving their habitat open, without any borders, as they can freely migrate and meet other cheetahs so that they can breed between different cheetah populations which would improve and facilitate gene exchange and reduce genetic diseases that cheetahs are, nowadays, encountering due to always meeting same population in a same territory.
- Cheetahs can be saved thanks to love. Captive and tame cheetahs can be supported with cheetah sponsorship programmes. Everyone who would love to help one or several cheetahs could do it, wherever in the world this person would be.
- Cheetahs can be save thanks to donations. Indeed, the implementation of programmes for wild animals needs funds for research, adapted infrastructures and special cares.
- Cheetahs can be saved if people choose to see them roaming around in the game during a safari, rather than in a cage. Both local people and tourists are invited to be aware about where they are meeting cheetahs and how these animals are treated there: economic issue or real hope for cheetahs to be helped?
